Fall 2000     ADBC NEWS     Vol. 1 No. 1

CONTEST!!!

We need a name for the newsletter! If you have an idea, write it down and send to us. The suggestions you send will be published in the December newsletter. The deadline for submitting names is November 10th, 2000. This way we can all see them and then be able to vote on which we would like. The winner will get a 5.00 gift certificate from Wal-Mart. Who can send us suggestions? Anyone who gets this newsletter, but only people who are deaf blind and are members of the ADBC will be allowed to vote.

ANNOUCEMENTS

Starting a newsletter is a big job. So far, we do have a Steering Editor, Sherry Cardell, who will get the newsletter started. Also helping will be Ann Garner! If anyone else is interested in helping, please let Sherry know. We need all the help we can get.

The newsletter will be printed in 18-point type, just like this, but it will also be available by e-mail. On the last page you will find a survey to help us know who wants the newsletter, in what format, and some other information we need to get started. The ADBC News will be published 4 times a year during the months of September, December, March, and June. This may change later, depending on how much help we have and the funds available to print this, etc. The deadlines for submitting things will be the 10th of the month prior to it’s publishing. For example, this month it was needed by Aug. 10th to publish in Sept. and so the next deadline is Nov. 10th.

For our 1st newsletter we have a few "Community Announcements". Most of the information was submitted by Ann Garner, whom I hope will become the writer of this column.

To start off, we have Monty and Carol Ball who will be grandparents again, smile. This will be their third grandchild and a great nephew for Ann Garner! He is due about December of this year. Congratulations to everyone, Mom, Grandparents and Great Aunt, smile!

Next we have Heather Myers (an SSP) who recently got engaged to Dale Shelton from Hot Springs. The wedding is tentatively planned for July 21, 2001 in Baton Rouge, LA. What wonderful news, Heather, we wish you both a happy, new life together! Please keep us posted.

Another SSP, Tracy Kauffman, along with her husband, Lee, are expecting their 3rd baby in March. They already have a daughter, Ashley and a son, Cody living at home. Welcome to the new little one!

Boy, it looks like baby fever is here. As Shanna Kirsey is expecting her first baby in April. Many of you were fortunate enough to have Shanna be your SSP. She has returned to Little Rock and is now a staff member at UALR in the DSS office.

We also report that Sherry’s oldest niece in Florida will be getting married. The happy couple, Suzanne and Duane McCain, will be married on St. Patrick’s Day during a traditional Irish wedding. Good luck to the newly weds.

Lastly, we have the wonderful news that our own Ann Garner has been hired as a substitute teacher through the Ar School f/t Blind (ASB). She is very busy working both the campuses of the Blind and Deaf Schools. Wow, that sounds interesting Ann, and must certainly keep you busy.

SPAGHETTI DINNER

Everyone has been busy planning for the fundraising dinner coming up in October. The ASD cafeteria has been reserved-a special Thanks goes to Pete Seiler at ASD! By the time the next newsletter comes out, the dinner will be over, but we can report in the next issue how successful it was. In past years, all the hard work has paid off so we add a special encouragement to the planning committee members to keep on going!

This is YOUR newsletter and what goes in it is up to you. We remind you though that because of space, we will need to edit some things plus put it into the right format for a newsletter. We need to start gathering news for the next issue. Remember we need them by November 10th to be included in the December (Winter) issue. Because this newsletter will be available in print, by e-mail and in a braille format we cannot accept pictures. Also too, space may need to be limited because of printing/mailing costs. However, we need YOUR help not only to submit things, but also to work on the newsletter itself. Send your items to:
