Winter ’01 THE DEAF-BLIND ARKANSAN Vol.1 No.1
ABOUT YOUR NEWSLETTER (abbreviated "NL")
Recently the Executive Board met and decided upon the following schedule:
Winter- mailed January, deadline Dec. 1st
Spring Issue- mailed April, deadline March 1st
Summer Issue- mailed July, deadline June 1st
Fall Issue- mailed October, deadline Sept. 1st
Items submitted to the NL can be mailed using large print, diskette, and even by Braille. You may also use our e-mail address: ADBCnews@aol.com or can hand them to Sherry Cardell at the social. Thanks for your patience as we undergo the steps to set up the newsletter schedule and some guidelines for submitting things. Adding some humor to this… We want this newsletter to succeed. I am reminded that when doing so, we must sometimes suck on lemons. (At first things may sour a little, like our original plans.) But we can’t give up, cause, if we suck on lemons hard enough, we will eventually suck-seed, smiles.
UPDATE ON THE CONTEST
No, we did not forget the newsletter contest to find a name. It was just delayed. At the recent social we voted on ten names that were submitted. Our thanks to each person who suggested names. They were all so good and so hard to chose from. However, there has to be one winner and that winner is Carel Dunaway! For submitting the winning name he wins a $5.00 gift certificate from Wal-Mart. Congratulations and thanks Carel!
OFFICER NEWS
Some of you responded asking for news from our officers. So, our first issue with the new name starts with our President, Art Babin.
"Hello everyone! I sit here and think what ADBC has accomplished in this past year. We had two successful fundraising events; the BBQ at Burn’s Park and the Spaghetti Dinner at ASD. Both helped us earn a good amount of money. A big Thanks for your hard work with these projects! The past year also included many fun socials… trips to Lake Degray, Magic Springs and Crystal Falls, plus to LCDC Camp … just to name a few. Many of you went as delegates to the AADB conference in Ohio. It was their 25th anniversary attended by over 1 thousand people. There were a lot of exhibits and workshops that helped us with our employment opportunities, independent living, etc. The next conference will be in San Jose, CA in July 2003. That means we all need to work hard in the next 2-3 years so we can help ADBC members go attend that conference. Another accomplishment is finally getting our tax-exempt status from the IRS. ADBC is now a formal and complete organization!
For the past few years, I have had the dual role of being President and also social director. I needed to concentrate more on my duties as your President, so with the approval of the Executive Board, we appointed Ann Garner as our social director. Best wishes, Ann! I end my report by wishing each of you a prosperous and healthy 2001 and I look forward to working with all of you in the coming year. Take care and God Bless!"

MAILBOX
Recently one of our readers wrote. Here is their letter:
"I like the ADBC newsletter very much; I would like to see
more people use e-mail, could you encourage them to do
so? I would also like to see jokes and some humor." We do encourage people to get their newsletters and fliers through e-mail, but we need to keep in mind that not everyone has a computer and even still there are a few who either can’t read things on-line or some that just prefer to have the printed version. Maybe you could help us encourage others to check out the website or use the e-mail system! Another letter asked for jokes.
Here are a few that were sent to us…
Does anyone know what happened to the bee that flew in a cow’s ear and ended up in a pail of milk? Well, it went in one ear and out the udder! (Sent in by Joyce Scott)
Do you know the five B’s of old age? Baldness, Bifocals, Bursitis, bulges, and bunions! (Sent in by Larry Wilson)
